Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai, an underwater volcano in the Tongan archipelago, erupted violently on January 15, 2022. According to a new study though, two faraway monitoring stations recorded a seismic wave some 15 minutes earlier.
New global data, along with other ocean, satellite and regional seismic studies, show a decadeslong increase in wave energy that coincides with increasing storminess attributed to rising global temperatures.
This phenomenon has affected a large part of the globe, which originated – according to the hypotheses – about 24 km off the coast of Mayotte, a French island located between Africa and the northern tip of Madagascar.
